The hidden Estepona
5 Things We Love about Estepona in Summer...
One thing that surprised us about Estepona is the abundance of activities it offers to its residents, centered around its nature and traditions.
We participated in several of them, and the result has been that, very close to everything, just a few minutes’ drive from the glamorous Marbella and a short distance from the wild beaches of Cádiz, Estepona offers a sunny life.
Let’s get to the important part:
Maritime Excursions: Fishing has been the city’s economic driving force for many years, and now, transformed into a tourist attraction, anyone curious can unleash their inner Popeye and join a fishing boat for a day. Besides going out to sea to experience the work of fishing boats and discover life in the fishing port, this experience allows us to taste the seafood of the area and even participate in one of their seafood cooking workshops. Sounds like a great plan, right?
Spend a day at the Pedregales Park.
A park located a few kilometers from Estepona, nestled at the foot of Sierra Bermeja. (We’ll talk more about Sierra Bermeja in a few lines)
What we like here: Its trails in the northern part of the park, where you can engage in numerous activities such as mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, and visit the waterfalls and pools of the Monterroso River. A different proposal if you’ve grown tired of so much beach…
Moreover, you can visit the Interpretation Center of the Prehistoric Dolmens of Corominas. We mentioned them in one of our previous posts.
Visit the Estepona Lighthouse.
And why, you may wonder… Because it is entirely visitable, and its 19th-century construction stands 21 meters tall, offering spectacular views of Gibraltar. Highly recommended.
Visit the Peak of Los Reales.
Plan it well as it involves a route through the “pinsapar” of Sierra Bermeja, allowing us to ascend to a maximum height of 1,400 meters, from where we can enjoy even more spectacular views of Estepona. We recommend planning the descent just in time to have lunch at Venta el Refugio. We know it deviates from the traditional summer proposal, but who wouldn’t fancy a good meal in the middle of a natural landscape? Avoid the hottest hours!
The Aquatic Route of the Padrón River. Sierra Bermeja.
A fun amphibious route for spending a great summer day, following the course of the Padrón River until reaching the pool of La Extranjera, and then returning. It’s a circular route suitable for everyone, but we also recommend exercising caution and wearing water shoes, and if possible, take a waterproof bag to keep all your belongings safe from getting wet.
Here’s the most comprehensive link we found: [link to the route].
