Welcome to Castellar de la Frontera. Just a few kilometres from the comforts of the Costa del Sol lies this incredible village in the Alcornocales Natural Park. Its origins date back to the Bronze Age (sites of Cuevas del Cancho, los del Tajo and Abejera) and what gives it its fairytale character is its medieval fortress (XII–XV centuries).

Most of the houses inside the castle have been converted into rural tourism accommodations and it is well worth a visit, as I will now tell you.

In addition to its marvelous views, Castellar offers many options for the most demanding tourists.

Delicious food: The restaurants offer a varied menu with the best of the Alcornocales Park, from wild boar meat to retinto beef, a breed native to the area.

Hiking routes: There are several interesting routes, but the most special one is undoubtedly the one you can follow along an ancient Roman road. It will connect you directly with the castle from the Venta La Jarandilla, and if you continue to the right, it will lead you to some anthropomorphic tombs. The route is very beautiful. We recommend doing the climb with a good cap and an ample supply of water.

The Monarch butterfly route: Also from the Venta de la Jarandilla, you can take this round trip route that runs along the river, and if you choose the right time of year, you can be accompanied by countless monarch butterflies that begin to appear at the end of February and beginning of March.
