The Empty Nest Syndrome

Children become independent. And then what?

In some cases, when our children leave, this feeling of their absence ends up becoming Empty Nest Syndrome.

It’s unbelievable how time goes by. It seems like it was just a few days ago that you were changing diapers, and after that, dealing with pre-adolescence, adolescence and post-adolescence. Now, when things seems calmer, the kids leave the nest.

In some cases, when our children leave, this feeling of their absence ends up becoming Empty Nest Syndrome. It may become an emotion of infinite sadness that could end up as outright depression if you don’t manage to deal with it.

Luckily, we can offer you some ideas to make this new independence more bearable:

– Accept that this is a Law of Life. Rejoice in your children’s determination and do not lose contact with them. Make them feel supported (but not overwhelmed, please).
– Use your friend network: schedule activities and keep busy.
Join a club: it could be sports, reading, painting… You will meet people who are in the same situation as you, with the free time to enjoy this new stage.
Travel: An activity that feeds the soul.

And last but not least…

Reconnect with your partner (or look for a new one ;))
